Gallery #8 “Covering” admin July 7, 2016September 5, 2016 Bare tailplane sealed with red nitrate dope and ready for covering. Stits Polyfiber being applied to the tailplane. One large piece of cloth glued to the wooden structure using Stits Polytak beginning along the middle of the D-nose ply on one side, then progressively gluing along the ribs and around the trailing edge then along the ribs on the reverse side and finally with a wide glued area along the other side of the D-nose ply. Smaller fabric pieces were then wrapped and glued around the front of the tailplane nose to overlap the aft piece of cloth. Gluing of Polyfiber on first side of D-nose. Trimming fabric on the tailplane tip and leaving sufficient to cover the flat tip end completely. With the two wing strut fitting straps removed, a long strip of Stits Polyfiber was glued along the bottom of the fuselage. The fabric hidden by the straps was well sealed using red nitrate dope and then silver butyrate dope, then the two wing strut fitting straps installed permanently. Part of fuselage side covering glued in place. Note temporary wooden struts fitted to main wing strut root attachment to support aircraft when inverted (engine in place).
